The Pierre Bourdieu Foundation was established in Geneva, Switzerland, in 2005. Its purpose is to promote cross-disciplinary and cross-national debates in the various social and human sciences, both at the academic and political levels, in the spirit of its namesake, who pursued an interdisciplinary and international research network.
On the founding
The foundation is based on a concept that the French sociologist Pierre Bourdieu co-developed a few months before his death in 2002. Its president is sociologist Franz Schultheis . He is currently a professor of sociology at Zeppelin University Friedrichshafen and a member of the Swiss National Research Council. He had worked with Bourdieu at the Centre de Sociologie Européenne in Paris since 1986. The other founding members also came from Pierre Bourdieu's circle and have researched and published alongside him.
